As part of the Roma Matrix project, I worked with a colleague to develop a mentoring project which aimed to provide opportunities for young Roma to develop research skills and to break down barriers to higher education. We worked with BHA (a charity working for equality in health and social care) to provide learning support, training and direction to the mentees and their chosen research project.
We decided to move away from more traditional forms of research and incorporate film and photography into the project. This enabled the mentees to capture their own narratives and that of their communities in more creative ways. We commissioned journalist and photographer Ciara Leeming to work with the mentees. She helped them to develop skills in digital media and to document the research findings and the project itself.
